New head Just
for the record this is more or less what I look like with my
new hair "style". I still look my best in extremely
low-light situations, when there is minimal glare from my forehead.

We're a-movin' on up The
chair hath arrived! And now respectability is only a stone's
throw away, I'm just sure of it. I was especially pleased that
the chair arrived without its wooden feet attached, so there
was no problem fitting it through my tiny door. Now I've got
a big-ass chair in my room, and suddenly all the rest of my
belongings look like garbage. I'm gonna have to do a lot of
work to dress up the rest of my space to justify this doozie.
Here are more pictures!

Chief Sitting Duck
I finally updated my Blogroll,
something I've been meaning to do for a long time. I mostly
just added a bunch of sites that I read all the time but for
whatever reason, didn't get listed previously. I also removed
a couple links, mostly because certain blogs had become dormant
(or nonexistent) of late. I am hoping they return at some
point, so i'm keeping them in my bookmarks file.
UPDATE: I just updated my band links sidebar as well. It
used to be just local bands, but I am now branching out. Again
I lament that not every single thing in the world has a website,
as there are many other bands I'd like to link to but they
for some unknowable reason do not have a website.
In furniture news: today is the day I receive my new armchair!
At long last, it's being delivered this afternoon. Check back
for copius photographs. Now I need a coffee table, an end
table, and an area rug. Also I need more art for my walls
and possibly an ottoman of some sort. Then I throwing out
this ugly futon and replacing it with a hot tub. Oh yeah!

Your funeral, my trial Some
Honor-Roll Eagle Scout from Wisconsin murdered
a substitute teacher just to see if he could get away with it
(allegedly). Talk about overachieving, this sounds right out
of Crime & Punishment. I suppose it's a natural
extension of the logic, as Mayor Quimby (yep, it's his real
name) inadvertently lauded the slayer by saying, "He can
do anything he sets his mind to."

I'll haunt you when you laugh
The ending of Sex and the City must have been a bigger
deal than I thought. Everywhere I went yesterday, regardless
of the time, people gave thanks that not everybody was glued
to their TVs. Was this like the Superbowl, an all-day affair
with a lame half-time show? Oh well, now it belongs to the Ages.
The Newsonic
show was again great. Seth
Misterka, the guy who does most of the organizing, said
the next show wouldn't be until May. This really sucks since
they've whet our appetites by scheduling 2 shows so close
together. Now we gotta wait until May? Say it ain't so. The
real surprise of Saturday's show for me was Big Bear, who
despite their name, turned out to be a progressive hardcore
band with a chick lead singer. I'm not sure I've ever seen
that configuration before, but they wailed. Is that screamo
vocals thing bad for your voice? The entire show, performers
and audience, all appeared to be Wesleyan
alumni. I'm not even sure I know where Wesleyan is.
Sunday some grad
school friends
showed up out of the blue to force me into Poet Intervention.
Their methods were harsh: they walked me all over Manhattan,
took me to paper stores, and took me to a reading at Zinc
Bar. We'll have to see if it takes. The weird thing is,
Tom
Devaney was one of the readers, a poet I saw at Tillie's
when I first moved to Clinton Hill.
After the reading I headed back to Brooklyn to catch the
tail end of the all-day Anti-Arena
benefit at Freddy's.
As usual, I should have publicized this event more, but alas,
I'm only one man. I didn't get there until 10 (the show had
been going on since 3) but I still saw several good acts:
Volcano (a little like Elvis Costello and the Attractions
and the Stones), The Minors (if Stevie Wonder sang lead for
an indie rock band; these guys kick total ass), and Afroskull
(afrobeat, Zappaesque stuff; the first band I have ever seen
at Freddy's who were asked to turn the volume down). There
were also some solo acts, a guy from Boston named Naseem and
a guy who goes by the moniker MC Enemy, who did a very cool
rap about the arena issue and the neighborhood. There's no
way anybody could watch this show and still think the neighborhood
would be better off with a big ugly complex where Freddy's
used to be.
Develop Don't Destroy, the group putting on the show, raised
nearly $2000 for the cause, and it looks like they will have
more benefits in the near future. Not only will I keep you
blogfolk apprised of this, I bet I could get Motico a gig
as well.
