Tie goes to the runner
Kathy
takes on SpellMeister R
Folks, ever since I've been back in town I've been out of
it. I've got a ton of stuff to do and yet I can't seem to
get any one thing done. Maybe I should employ my Day Planner?
Naaaaah. That'd be just one more thing to worry over, and
experience proves I wouldn't finish that either.

Mr. Regina was a hoot until he misspelled "ophthalmology"
Ah
sweet distraction! I think I understand the allure of going
to all those bar quiz nights: it's something to do to preoccupy
your mind for a while with stuff other than the enormous mess
that is your life. Plus beer! Last night was the long-delayed
inaugural Spelling Bee at Freddy's,
masterminded and hosted by JoshR.
Nobody had any idea how this would go over, how long it would
last, how many people would participate. I was feeling especially
disoriented and didn't intend on spelling, but Heather
insisted I sign up. I justified it to myself as I couldn't
imagine many other would put themselves though this torture.
As it turned out, lots of people wanted the torture. 19 people
signed up to spell in total, at least half the audience.

Jonathan tries to ignore the NPR Dave
This original group got whittled down fairly quickly. I made
it through the first round but got knocked out in the second
because I forgot "armoire" has an "e"
at the end. Duh. But a lot of people made silly errors, which
was somehow reassuring. But several people began to distinguish
themselves as the words increased in difficulty. After several
rounds, it was down to 3: Jonathan, Allison and Linus.

Allison was a heavy hitter right up until the end
Eventually it was just Allison and Linus and then Allison
got tripped up on some weird multi-syllable, rule-breaking
word. It was decided that if Linus could spell it correctly,
he'd take the jackpot (a staggering $19!) and if not, they'd
split it. And damn if he didn't stroll up there and spell
it like he was reading off a laundry list. The whole thing
only took about an hour.

But Linus ended up as top dog
