Merry Christmas, I don't wanna fight
tonight I'm
gonna be mighty embarrassed if, years from now, children read
in the history books that World War III started over protests
about some
cartoons published in a Danish newspaper. The conspiracy
theorist in me thinks somebody's pulling strings in the background
to make the protests so inflamed and inciting violence. I
know fundamentalists don't need much to set them off, but
comic strips? Come on! Haven't they heard the old saying about
how you gotta pick your battles...
There have been protests
all over the world, riots, fires, flag-burnings of many nations,
retaliatory contests looking for the best Holocaust cartoon,
requests for Danish citizens to leave countries like Indonesia,
and protesters everywhere appear to be attacking anything
and everything in the name of outrage over the comics.
This is some stupid fucking bullshit. I respect anybody's
right to dissent, but I can't believe all this is happening
without the help of forces who feel they would benefit from
the static. Nobody could get that pissed off by some cartoons.
Right? I know there's supposed to be a law against depictions
of the Prophet, but he's been portrayed throughout
history and never has there been a stink like this.

Maybe movies like Valley
of the Wolves: Iraq will help sublimate anti-American
sentiment in the more moderate Muslim world. Maybe it'll make
things worse.
