Cats – Got the Jimmy Legs

Cats

For your entertainment

Let's catch up! We have been busy with cats and landscaping projects (which are, not coincidentally, cat-related). We took a bunch of cats to the new Glendale, Queens, ASPCA spay/neuter clinic, the newly-opened facility that replaces the mobile clinics. In order to better provide mobile spay services to the public, the ASPCA decided to stop running concurrent vans for both regular folk as well as us feral cat enthusiasts. I guess it makes sense, but there is a big learning curve for the new system, for both us and the ASPCA.

Come and get it

Here's something slightly less cat-centric for once (though still totally related to cats):

I'm taking part in a big bake sale on Saturday in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The proceeds from this sale will go to the group Big City Little Kitty, an overlapping bunch of good-hearted folks who help cats in the Brooklyn-Queens area. This is also part of the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale, an annual event that helps raise awareness of veganism. Mainly, it helps people to realize that 'vegan' isn't a synonym for 'yuck.'

I will be providing brownies to the effort, pretty much the only vegan dessert I think I've perfected. I guess I can do okay chocolate chip cookies too, but the brownies usually come out more consistently than anything else I try. Let's hope that holds true for this weekend!

There will be bake sales all over the place between Saturday and the following weekend, but our booth with be on Saturday from 1-4pm in Greenpoint on Manhattan Ave between Nassau and Norman (G train to Nassau). We'll be set up in front of (and possibly inside if it rains) Natural Vitamins. Please swing by and help us out!

Check out this great post by BCLK that encapsulates the kind of work we do. Hope to see you Saturday!

George

I am getting tired of writing posts like these. Last year we lost several cats for one reason or another, and I figured we were done with these stories for a while. But a few days ago we lost another feral, possibly two. (more…)

We're having much more fun

Now that the kittens are well-established in their new homes, we have turned to new projects. One project was getting cats rounded up for a friend's spay/neuter clinic. We knew there were a couple of unfixed ferals visiting our front feeding station (windowsill) so we set the strap up this past weekend. Imagine our surprise when the cat we caught was unknown to us.

I think the cat we caught was the same one I had seen at least a year before; back then he was small and skinny and probably not full-grown. Now he's an enormous elephant of a cat, with a block head and big jowls. Oddly, he has the highest, breathiest baby-voice ever. We're calling him Chuck Bass. He's totally tame, but of course hasn't been neutered. So he's on the spay van today, I'm hoping the mild cold he seems to have won't keep them from snipping him down.

Other projects include making insulated beds for our outdoor cat shelters and dealing with our new fosters, two old-lady cats with a variety of ailments. Gilda's owner passed away so she's coping with life in a house with slightly younger humans and lots of other cats. She is warming up to us but she seems very thin to me, so we're trying to fatten her up.

Mabel, on the other hand, just lost some weight: we had an huge ear polyp removed from her left ear. Her history is foggy, she was found on the street but must have been in a home once. She is either really old or has had a really hard time of it. The vet also removed several rotten teeth, so not only does she have to endure daily ear drops, she has a whole mouth to heal. She doesn't dig us at all yet, but once the meds are done I hope she will come around. There's just something about a grouchy old cat that makes you want to ingratiate yourself.

Gone baby gone

And like that, they were gone.

Almost 3 months to the day of their arrival, the last of the colony kittens has gone to his new home. I can hardly believe we moved them all, especially some of the more 'difficult' ones (okay, Elmer). (more…)
