3 of 5: note the size difference of the big black kitten
While we made plans to get the neighbor's cat colony TNR'd, other issues began to surface. Namely, there are several kittens in the colony who may be young enough to be tamed. We discussed what to do and consulted our friends who have way more experience with kittens. The consensus was that we should nab the kittens and see how wild they were. (more…)

Mugsy from 2008
Last Sunday night/Monday morning, our feral cat Mugsy was hit by a car and killed. It's been pretty rough this week, coping with the news and trying to make sense of it. Those of you familiar with what we do and this cat in particular know this is no regular loss of cat. (more…)

Gray Boy, moments after his triumphant (and totally not-dead) return
Gray Boy, the newest feralish cat we have assimilated into our colony, climbed up the neighbor's tree and couldn't figure out how to get down. He whined incessantly from one of the highest branches, some 40 feet up. With some difficultly I could make it over to the tree, hoping the neighbors wouldn't notice the sweaty bald guy running around their yard. But despite my coaxing, he wouldn't or couldn't get down. He's an odd duck, a cat born indoors but never socialized to humans. So he's a feral cat who never really lived outdoors before. This was probably his first tree, then, and he clearly didn't have the appropriate life skills to figure out how one gets down from a tree once one gets up there. He continued to fret, making me nuts for the next two days. (more…)
Harlem was a cat rescued by Empty Cages Collective from Animal Care & Control. He was positive for Feline Leukemia. Normally these cats are killed even though they may not be ill at that time. Harlem (and several other Felv+ cats) lived at the ECC space waiting for adoptions, one of the only places in the city to take these cats in. Harlem died recently of cancer; he never did get his forever home.
Some would argue he should have been killed as originally scheduled; he suffered for years at the shelter space, never knowing the love of a real family. (more…)
