Project: Couch Cutting

Our pal Sean was getting rid of a couch. We have no furniture. It was a match made in Heaven. Except for one thing: we couldn't get the couch inside the house. Well, we knew it wouldn't fit through our main entrance, so it was taken in through the parlor floor entrance and through the door that leads to my room on the second floor. But it was too long to fit down the inner staircase, so it's been sitting in my room for a week. We discussed other methods of moving it to the living room, including trying to throw it over the fence, taking it through the backyard. But no other option seemed as practical as just cutting the damn thing in half and reassembling it downstairs. So I got out my coping saw and hacked the mother apart.
Here's what the finished product looks like. Looks pretty normal, right?
But looking at the back reveals our modifications.
The couch is basically an open wood frame with a spring bed. I sawed through the frame and bolted it back together again with metal plates (there's another set of plates on the bottom edge of each side of the frame as well). I added another leg to the middle for support, but it doesn't seem totally necessary. I'll probably affix another leg to the middle of the front of the couch as well.

Now it's time to relax on the divan with some Allen Ginsberg. M said I looked like a Beatnik this morning because my hair was messed up and I was wearing glasses. Is that really all the Beat Generation provided to history? Thanks to Sean for the couch!
