<< Halloween 2004: Sunday

Sunday I was not feeling much like going out again. But as usual, I was glad I did. After all, it wasn't like I'd have to go into the office on Monday! Sorry folks. Anyway, there was a big show at Asterisk and I figured I needed to give my costume one more chance to shine. Despite the looming work week and steep cover price, the place pretty packed. It's been worse there before, but now you had to deal with pointy costumes and people with blue makeup all over the upper bodies. They were actually checking IDs at the door which kinda spooks me. It's like they're becoming a legitimate establishment or something.

Direct from Hollywood Cemeteries

Direct from Hollywood Cemeteries opened the show. I dunno who these guys are or what else they do, but they sure know how to play a Halloween set. It was almost all covers (if not all), and not just Misfits songs. They did really good versions of several Sonics songs (tho not my favorite "Hey Cinderella"). The lead singer looked familiar, and I realized at some point that because he was wearing vampire fangs, it made him look a little like the dentally-challenged Darby Crash. They apparently played a Germs song, too, but I totally missed it.

I finally got to see Measles, Mumps Rubella (MMR) next. I think they're still mostly a DC band, but Robert has been living here for a while, having just moved a few blocks from Asterisk actually. Maybe this means they'll be playing there more often. I dunno if they would agree, but to me MMR had elements of Joy Division, The Contortions and The Feelies. How can you go wrong? I hate pegging bands like that, because obviously they have their own thing going, but those references are bands I really like and never see show up as influences in new bands.

Somehow I proceeded to miss every other single band that night. I was probably wedged on one side of the hall while 60,000 people crushed past me. I was standing near the exit when some kid asked me, "Is this the only way out?" I said yes and then added, "It's probably a fire hazard." It was then I knew I had picked the right costume.

Josh as Papa Smurf: by the end of the night everybody was sporting some of that blue makeup. Heather is a Silent Film Star, but I can't read what's on her title card.

The ironic thing is we were having a conversation about Birth of a Nation when Nick showed up in his "Ebony & Ivory" costume.

Jenny was bartending but was also on hand to provide free medical advice. This apparently included absinthe.
In the cartoon you could never see the tattoos

Time to take Papa Smurf home and attempt to remove the blue

Saturday Night
