Evil is his one and only name – Got the Jimmy Legs

Evil is his one and only name

I just finished a huge project at work and am loath to do anything else productive today, so let's catch up. We're back on the foster cat wagon, this time with a stray who showed up in the yard recently. We've been calling him Winger but we may change that to something more appropriate as we learn his personality. And that personality is evil.

Well, he's not exactly evil, he can be very sweet. He loves being petted and will roll all around and sit in your lap and let you carry him around at length. But before you get to do this, you'll get the hissing of a lifetime! He hisses more than any tame cat I've ever seen, it's almost like he doesn't know what hissing means. His new thing is to let me pet him for a while and then when I turn to go he hisses viciously and swats at my leg. I understand that maybe he doesn't want me to go, but jeez, learn some manners, buddy!

He has a variety of other behaviors that mystify me, like how he won't eat all of his food at once like all my cats (obviously he's never lived on the street where every meal could be your last). He won't play with the string-on-a-stick toy that has converted even the stodgiest feral cat. He meows with a hoarse, hollow sound not unlike the wail of a ghost.

But I have a new theory that explains nearly everything about him: he's an evil supervillain's cat. It makes perfect sense, evil supervillains love long-haired white cats, and some of their personality is bound to rub off on their pet. Who knows what happened to this guy's evil owner? Dropped down a chimney? Frozen in space? The mind reels. So now the real trick is, where do evil supervillains go to adopt their evil sidekick cats?

Possibly a futuristic, mobile adoption device, hell-bent on the uncompromising, total adoption of every cat in the 5 boros? Yes. It's the North Shore Animal League Mobile Adoption Van, coming to the corner of N. 7th & Bedford in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this Saturday at Noon. Step out of the L train station and see a big-ass bus loaded with mostly Empty Cages Collective cats and kittens. Our man may be there if there's room, but I need to de-evil him a little more to make him tolerant of non-evil adopters.

You could name him "MAD cat" after Dr. Claw's evil kitty in Inspector Gadget 🙂

Maybe I missed it, but whatever happened to this lovely cat?

we actually adopted him out to an art student who lives in our old neighborhood. I just got an update from her, he's now named Bruce and is reportedly spoiled rotten! She sent some photos, he looks like he's doing just fine!

Excellent! Bruce! I love when people name their cats odd human names. My favorite is a cranky, but sweet female cat that i sit for named "Frank."

I used to read your blog, but somehow had lost track. You should update more. Great blog!

I am not looking for another cat just yet, but will be in the future. Contending with a Hepatic Lipidosis cat who is 13 (lots of work), so it wouldn't be fair on her stress levels, or a new kitties acclimation. 3 weeks ago we lost a giant white cat who we adopted in Ireland & brought back to Brooklyn. Lymphoma of the liver. We now have 4 total– two 15 year olds, the poorly 13 year old w/ Fatty Liver & Iggy who is only 5. He needs someone to wrestle with & misses his buddy immensely, so in future will be looking for a cat his age. Just gotta beat this HL case & we'll do it. 5 is what I can manage & I know that now.

Keep up your great work with cats. It's wonderful to read about.

I just read about Mugsy. Awful.
    : (

Just to share, because it helps to be able to talk about it, here is my cat (Jack a/k/a The Christmas Ham) when he first showed up in my yard in Ireland:

We took him in & here is a photo of what he looked like cleaned up:

He was my first ADULT rescue as all of the others had always come as kittens. I have bottle fed many a kitten & re-homed. They started landing in my lap at 16 years old. He hadn't been neutered & by magical intervention (internet) I was able to get his story. He had once been the "prized possession" for a family. They moved & simply left him behind. He had left a string of white kittens behind & we were able to see his kittens who looked just like him. How I wish I had one of his offspring, because he was a great character.

It was a TOUGH rescue for us. My senior cats were REALLY unhappy about his arrival, and OH LORD as those hormones leached out, so did the spray. We worked with him & he became such a loving & well behaved house cat. When we reached Brooklyn he knew that he was truly apart of the tribe. We only got 2 years with the Ham. Our loss is deep and has affected humans & cats alike. We miss him greatly.

As soon as our Daisy cat snaps back into full health emotionally & physically, I will be looking to adopt & head straight for you. I am doing my part, but you are doing an even greater part. Thanks for that!
