Got the Jimmy Legs

After the fire

Bad fire on the next block, house burned down, damaging at least 3 other houses and killing 2 people. We watched the firemen work, I don't know how they can do that job. Frightening and humbling.

Come and get it

Here's something slightly less cat-centric for once (though still totally related to cats):

I'm taking part in a big bake sale on Saturday in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The proceeds from this sale will go to the group Big City Little Kitty, an overlapping bunch of good-hearted folks who help cats in the Brooklyn-Queens area. This is also part of the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale, an annual event that helps raise awareness of veganism. Mainly, it helps people to realize that 'vegan' isn't a synonym for 'yuck.'

I will be providing brownies to the effort, pretty much the only vegan dessert I think I've perfected. I guess I can do okay chocolate chip cookies too, but the brownies usually come out more consistently than anything else I try. Let's hope that holds true for this weekend!

There will be bake sales all over the place between Saturday and the following weekend, but our booth with be on Saturday from 1-4pm in Greenpoint on Manhattan Ave between Nassau and Norman (G train to Nassau). We'll be set up in front of (and possibly inside if it rains) Natural Vitamins. Please swing by and help us out!

Check out this great post by BCLK that encapsulates the kind of work we do. Hope to see you Saturday!

This could be everywhere

We had been dreading this past weekend for months. A few times a year we rent a Uhaul van and stock up at Costco, mostly for cat food. This time around we had more than Costco in our sights, though, so we needed the van for a few days. All told we hit Costco, Ikea, Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target and of course, Sahadi's (okay this wasn't really part of the agenda, but we did stock up on hummus and baba ganoush, which is already going fast).

This whole process was complicated immeasurably by all the snow we got nearly a week before. Read More »
